La Fête Nationale is the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille. First let us understand “Bastille.” Bastille was a fortress in Paris, formally known as the Bastille Saint-Antoine. It played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and for most of its history was used as a state prison by the kings of France. Louis XIV used the Bastille as a prison for upper-class members of French society who had opposed or angered him. The Bastille held a large cache of ammunition and gunpowder. The Storming of the Bastille set off a series of events that led to the overthrow of King Louis XVI and the French Revolution. The success of the revolutionaries gave commoners throughout France the courage to rise up and fight against the nobles who had ruled them for so long.
